Center of the Nation Museum and Monument

A few weeks ago we took a fun little trip south where we acted like tourists and had a great time! I like to Google "free things to do near whatever city we're going to" and have found some awesome stops.  Roadtrippers is a website I've recently began to rely heavily on for finding us odd stops that may not be very popular.
I was shocked to see the Center of the Nation Museum and Monument pop up in South Dakota of all things. Shouldn't that be in Kansas or something? Well, it was until 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii were added and that moved this location northeast to Belle Fourche, South Dakota. There is also a lovely museum onsite and admission is free! Note: RV parking was a bit tricky since there happened to be 2 school buses parked in the RV parking but once we circled around the block we were able to park along the street easily.

Checking out the old tractor.

Lots of pretty flowers grow here.

Vintage toys

Michael loved the salt and pepper shaker collection.

The printer at work.

The museum was rather a strange mix of just old things grouped together with lots of interesting signage. The children were extremely impressed with the many hands on areas they had for them to explore.

An activity table with books, coloring pages, and pieces to create a bag puppet.

A trunk full of dress-up clothes was a hit for these too!

Moonshining during the prohibition.

The 18th Amendment outlawed alcohol. This statement greatly amused us!

The Monument was impressive!

The sidewalk was lined with the flags of all 50 states. We had fun naming as many as we could.

A little cabin that has been moved to the museum.

The Monument from a distance.
This was a perfect little break in our travel day and something that we all enjoyed.
