Catstair Canyon and Kanab, UT

Last week I made the mournful comment that we haven't even seen any petroglyphs in our 3 months in Arizona/Utah. Leave it to Eldon to have a map in hand within hours, and we set off to Catstair Canyon. Located between Page, AZ and Kanab, UT, we've driven past this fun little canyon several times and never realized it!
Coming from Page, AZ, right after milepost 24 there is a very small lane in between 2 sections of guard rails. You'll need to go through a gate (be sure to close it again) and after about 0.1 of a mile you'll come to a very small parking lot. The rest of the way is pretty well marked. It's a short hike- less then 0.5 mile to the cliff where the petroglyphs are located. We'd highly encourage that you continue the short hike to the end of this box canyon. Check out my pictures below if you need more reasons!

The red man can clearly be seen and just to the left is a figure in white.
Sadly many of the petroglyphs and pictographs have either faded or been vandalized but it's still amazing. We learned that petroglyphs are painted on and pictographs are actually carved or chipped into the rock. And obviously, you're not going to touch them since the oil from our skin will darken them over time.
This may possible be some form of counting? Who knew chevron was in hundreds of years ago?!

Walking farther back into the canyon. Emily was upset because I wouldn't give her a snack. She was really miffed when I just ignored her ignoring me :).

Lots of neat holes!

More cool stuff!

Our 4 favorite people at the end of the Catstair Canyon. Emily is smiling because she finally has food, lol.

Instead of heading back to the truck once we were out of the canyon, we headed a mile up a wash after a geo-cache.

We walked under the road in the tunnel, which is also a safe way for the deer to cross the road.

Gorgeous red rock that was on an angle with intriguing white lines through it.
Since we were only 40 miles from Kanab, UT we headed in to the city park to enjoy our picnic lunch. We were pleasantly surprised by this cute little town. Even though the population is only 4,000 ( half of Page), they have an impressive park with a huge playground, pool, skateboard park, splash pad, ball field, fire pits, and a great view. The parents were actually playing with their children instead of staring at their phones and I was especially happy to see someone chasing after a piece of trash instead of deliberately throwing it down. Hopefully we'll get to spend more time here someday.

At the city park

These pretty trees were covered in bees but they wouldn't sit still for a picture.
